EXPEDITION TO THE SHIPWRECK SITE

On January 31, 1903, the survivors of the crew of Friedrich Albert arrived at Orustustaðir after 11 days of hardship on the Skeiðarársandur. Nine of the twelve-man crew were still alive, and their lives were finally saved by Icelandic farmers.

An expedition was undertaken to the shipwreck site on January 31, 2021, exactly 118 years after the crew found shelter and was rescued. The expedition was well-equipped with vehicles, and an airplane was used to survey the conditions. The expedition members encountered various difficulties that can be considered insignificant compared to the experiences of the shipwrecked crew. The day before, a flight was conducted over the sand to assess the conditions and determine if it was safe to drive to the shipwreck site, as the conditions there can be very dangerous due to the wet sand that can swallow people and vehicles.

Here you can see the coverage in Fréttablaðið about that expedition.

Exactly at this spot, Friedrich Albert ran aground on January 19, 1903.
Öræfajökull looms over the sand that the men wandered across for 11 days in search of rescue.
